Conservation

To gain a complete understanding of the original historic intent of the decorative paint and finishes, a thorough analysis of the paint and plaster is conducted. This may consist of studying historic documents such as photos, period newspaper articles and, or original blueprints. Exposing the historic paint layer to reveal the targeted or original period and, or removing paint chips for microscopic examination can inform the correct historic color palette as well as the exact hand of the original artisan. Detailed drawings with notations are created by tracing the exposed patterns and decoration. This is an important step to insure an accurate replication.

Original surfaces targeted for conservation can be tested to create appropriate cleaning and conservation systems that will clean and stabilize those painted surfaces within the parameters of the AIC.

Materials, color palette, and techniques as well as historic information are brought together to create a cohesive picture of how all these elements work in concert resulting in the most impactful result.

Restoration

Restoration includes the documentation of the targeted historic decoration with a complete understanding of the paint and plaster conditions. Executing recommended conservation treatments and historic decorative finishes with the emphasis on the original intent.
